Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve
and Haida Heritage Site

Gwaii Haanas is a rugged and remote wilderness, with very few maintained trails.  Services are only available in the small community of Rose Harbour. Access is limited by boat or floatplane only. To manage visitors impacts on the natural and cultural features of Gwaii Haanas, and to help preserve your experience of wilderness solitude, groups are limited to 12 people on shore within sight or sound of each other except in the community of Rose Harbour.   According to Parks Canada, camping is having a serious impact in many areas and is also a serious concern to the Haida Nation.  We believe we are the best option if you are concern about your impact and the preservation of the area in it's natural state.  Very strict rules are enforced about camping especially for the protection of black bears.

Gwaii Haanas entry is based on a limited entry system managed by

Then you have all the not so obvious critters sharing the ecosystem in the intertidal zone: sea urchins, crabs, mussels, abalone, rock scallops, moon snails, red turbans and starfish of all colours just to name a few. Gwaii Haanas offers a wide variety of ecosystems like rain forest with giant ferns and trees, open alpine muskegs, tidal flats, a few alpine lakes and a lot more... The shores offers a wide variety of settings from jagged rock outcrops to fine white sand beaches.  Many campsite are accessible by kayak and fresh water is easy to find.
Several types of mammals coexist including the largest black bears in the world, black tail deer, raccoons, river otters and more. The black bears are quite shy compare to the mainland one. We are fortunate to be able to live in a place where bears and humans can still coexist.

WEATHER:
Much cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter compared to the rest of Canada, Gwaii Haanas is an ideal place for people who dislike extreme temperatures. Winds can be quite strong at times although we get most of the gales and storms between September and March. Prevailing winds are usually North/West in dry, sunny weather and Southerly when the clouds herd in. We usually get a fair amount of precipitation, most of it between September and March.
Weather is very unpredictable in this area. For this reason, we can't tell you what is better!  Anytime between May and September is fair game...  Clothing's suitable for sunshine or rain is recommended.
On summer solstice (June 21-22), You can expect about 20 hours of daylight.
Canadian Coast Guards broadcast marine forecast every six hours on several frequencies.

SEA CONDITIONS:
Winds and currents can drastically change sea conditions in a matter of minutes. Open waters, especially the Hecate Straight and the west coast can be very dangerous if unprepared, poorly equipped or inexperienced.  Sea temperature is fairly cold even in the summer, which mean chances of survival are drastically reduced due to hypothermia.  Rose Harbour immediate area is quite sheltered so it is suitable for inexperienced kayakers. Coastguard maintain an excellent weather forecast on VHF marine radio.
