We recommend you to visit "North Beach" and Tow Hill if you are up that way. Moresby Camp:Site of a close down logging camp. It is reachable on a poorly maintained gravel road from Sandspit or Alliford Bay (Sandspit ferry terminal). There is no facilities there except a garbage can. Located in Cumshewa Inlet, it is the closest you can drive to Gwaii Haanas. From there, you must go by water. A short distance away by boat is the ancient Haida village of Skedans. There is no maintained boat ramp but 4 wheel drive beach access is available at several locations for boats launching. A large private dock (which is slowly sinking) is owned by a logging company and is open to the public as long as you stay out of their way. Nansdins (SGang Gwaay 'LLnagaay):
Port Clements:Small logging town offering basic services and accommodations. They had 2 major setbacks a few years ago. The rare Golden Spruce was cut down by a lunatic and the even rarer White Raven was electrocuted in a accident. There is a small museum of logging history. Queen Charlotte City:Much smaller then its name imply, it offers a wide range of services and accommodations. Floatplane are conveniently flying right from the center of town. It is sometimes possible to buy fresh fish at the fisherman wharf but Canadian Department of fisheries stupid regulations basically shut it down. A large information center offers tourism opportunities and all there is to know about Haida Gwaii. Rose Harbour:Location of Gwaii Haanas Guest House and Kayaks Site of an old whaling town established over a 100 years ago, Rose Harbour is now a
small alternative community of 3 homestead proud of calling Gwaii Haanas it's home. Parks Canada still denies
it's existence to be able to refuse the legal rights of the residents. But obviously, we do exist
and everybody visiting Rose Harbour are very happy to see a small community perfectly integrated
in it's ecosystem by not relying on the extraction of the natural resources for it's economy. We
offer many important services including responding to emergencies and providing fresh food from
several of the resident's organic gardens. Our homestead is the furthest one on the west side of
the bay. If you are in need, you can be sure to find somebody to help you
(unlike Parks Canada) all year around
and at no cost to the taxpayer... Sandspit:Small town offering basic services, accommodation and the airport where passenger planes from Vancouver lands. A limousine service is available between Queen Charlotte City and Sandspit. Sandspit is connected to Graham Island with a small car ferry traveling between Alliford Bay and Skidegate Landing. You can drive to Moresby Camp using a logging road from Sandspit or the ferry terminal. Skidegate:Haida village offering basic services and close to the ferry terminal in Skidegate Landing. We highly recommend the Haida Gwaii Museum (2km south) for its wide selection of ancient artefacts from Haida Natives and first settlers. Visiting the Skidegate museum is highly recommended. Many totem poles are in display indoor and a good selection of early Haida Carvings can be appreciated. |
